Mumbai
Indians are the most successful side in Indian T20 League, winning the trophy 4
times (2013, 2015, 2017 & 2019). Rohit Sharma-led side will lock horns
against Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings on September 19 in the tournament opener.
For the new season, they have signed some quality players and their side looks
quite strong on paper but how they perform in UAE, will be interesting to see.
In today’s section, we break Mumbai Indian on a fantasy table. How we decode

Fantasy slots
Opening
Players available - Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Chris Lynn
Our picks: Rohit Sharma & Quinton de Kock
Mumbai
Indian bought Australian opener Lynn who had good numbers with Kolkata but the
confusion will be over as Mumbai would pick De Cock with Rohit. They cannot go
with two overseas players in their XI. De Cock scored 529 runs in the previous
season as an opener at an average of 35 and a strike rate of 133. He is their
wicketkeeper option.
The
skipper cannot bat in the middle-order as he has good numbers in the top-order.
If De Cock had a dull season in the first half, Lynn can get a nod and Ishan
Kishan can take the gloves behind the stumps.
Middle-order
Players available - Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Saurabh
Tiwary, Aditya Tare, Sherfane Rutherford, Anukul Roy
Our picks: Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan
Ishan
Kishan is not just playing the sheet anchor in the squad but also delivering
the acceleration mode in middle-overs. Management tried him in middle-overs and
he played some handy innings under pressure.
Suryakumar
Yadav joined Mumbai in 2018 and he is the leading run-scorer for the side,
scoring 936 runs at an average of 35 and a strike rate of 132. He has the
potential to deliver at any situation and even play a finisher role. If nay
player underperforms, Mumbai has the Indian options such as Saurabh Tiwary and
Aditya Tare. If they can pick overseas, they have Windies player Sherfane
Rutherford.
Finishing slot
Players available - Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Sherfane
Rutherford
Our picks: Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard
Mumbai
Indians have the best finishers in the tournament. Pollard and Pandya can take
the game away from any situation with their extraordinary caliber. Pollard
recently led his side to win the 4th Caribbean T20 League
title. He even picked wickets in the tournament which is a positive sign for
the management to try him as the 6th bowling
option.
Pandya
is the T20 package and can damage the entire bowling unit of the opposition. In
the last three seasons, Pandya scored 912 runs for Mumbai with a strike rate of
over 160. He is the 5th bowler for the side who can even bowl at the death. We don’t
think, both players will be dropped in a single game as they are the key assets
for the management.
Spinners
Players available - Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahark, Jayant Yadav
Our picks: Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar
UAE
is a paradise for the spinners and the team would try different options after
the tournament progresses. Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar are the two most
possible picks for Mumbai in these conditions. Krunal also provides the bowling
option but Chahar’s performance would define Mumbai’s spin success.
Chahar
is economical but can he give breakthroughs in the middle-overs will be a big
question. The spin department is not so effective compared to other teams. In
the middle of the tournament, Jayant Yadav can also make it into the
eleven.
Pacers
Players available - Jasprit Bumrah, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Trent
Boult, Mitchell McClenaghan, James Pattinson, Dhawal Kulkarni
Our picks: Jasprit Bumrah, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Trent Boult
The
pace-attack is the strongest part of the Mumbai Indians. They got Trent Boult
from Delhi last year as trade and Malinga will miss the season. The world’s
number one bowler Bumrah will lead the attack with left-arm pacer Boult.
New
signing Nathan Coulter-Nile is also going to be a good replacement of Malinga
with the new ball. Mumbai has the alternative options as Mitchell McClenaghan
and James Pattinson if Boult or Coulter-Nile underperforms. Rohit can even try
out Dhawal Kulkarni to release one spot in the overseas quota.
